I've Been in
Your Student's Shoes.
I grew up in an international school. I know what it feels like to walk into a classroom where everyone speaks a language you're still learning — and to push yourself through examinations that feel bigger than you.
That experience didn't just shape who I am. It became the foundation for everything we teach at GL Academy.
A Journey That Started
as a Student
Growing Up in an International School
From a young age, I attended an international school where lessons were taught in English — a language I was simultaneously trying to master. Every class was a double challenge: understand the subject, and understand the language it was being delivered in. I had to figure out how to learn faster than my peers, or fall behind.
When the Standard Methods Didn't Work
Like most students, I tried the conventional route — vocabulary lists, grammar drills, rote memorisation of formulas and essay templates. It worked, up to a point. But I kept hitting a ceiling. I could recall facts under pressure, but I wasn't truly understanding. I wasn't becoming confident. I was becoming a better memoriser.
Discovering a Better Way to Learn
Sitting the Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level examinations pushed me to rethink everything. Under that level of academic pressure, I had to identify what was actually making the difference — not between passing and failing, but between understanding and merely surviving the exam. That shift in thinking changed how I approached language, how I approached subjects, and eventually, how I teach.
Building with a Clear Purpose
After graduating, I returned to education — not because I had to, but because I saw a gap that no one was filling. Students were being tutored. But they weren't being understood. I founded GL Academy to be the place that changes that.
Why Most Students
Are Held Back
After working with hundreds of students, I've seen the same pattern again and again. The problem isn't ability — it's method.
The Common Approach
- Memorising long vocabulary lists without context
- Drilling grammar rules until they feel robotic
- Forcing academic content through repetition, not understanding
- Treating every student the same, regardless of background
- Studying for the exam, not for the skill
Result: Students plateau. They pass, but don't grow confident.
The GL Academy Way
- Building vocabulary through real usage and natural immersion
- Teaching the why behind grammar, so rules become intuitive
- Breaking down academic concepts until students own them
- Meeting each student where they are — culturally and academically
- Building the skill itself — results follow naturally
Result: Students gain genuine confidence and lasting ability.
Jacob Eom Founder & Director, Global Leaders Academy"Every student I've taught has reminded me of myself at that age — capable, curious, but sometimes stuck in a method that wasn't built for them."
"I didn't start GL Academy to run another tuition centre. I started it because I believe there's a better way to learn — one that respects each student's journey and builds something that lasts far beyond the exam."
"If you're reading this as a parent, I want you to know: we will treat your child the way I would have wanted to be treated. With patience, with rigour, and with genuine belief in their potential."
